Attack of the Iguanas
Last year, every morning at 3:30am we were woken up by a rooster. Now, I’m not located on a lake or even in the country, so I never actually figured out why this rooster was where it was. It almost seemed like one of my neighbor’s pets. All that I knew was that every morning at 3:30am this rooster would crow for at least a half hour. No matter how far I hid my head under the covers or how many pillows I put over my head, I was woken up every morning. You wonder why some animals stay in certain locations, but never come up with the answer.
Recently when I read an article in the Palm Beach Post, and how the city commissioners in Palm Beach County were voting on whether to join an anti-iguana movement to force stricter regulations on irresponsible pet owners, it made me think of that little old rooster who loved waking me up. Should this movement pass, iguana owners would be force to have identifying microchips implanted into the iguanas. This would allow authorities to identify the iguanas should they escape or be released illegally. Owners would also need to pay $100 a year in order to have a pet iguana. A similar bill was passed to regulate the sale of pythons and anacondas.
Previous complaints of iguanas include a 5-foot iguana taking over a resident’s backyard, while another resident remembers a time when nearly 30 iguanas were staring at him. What a nice surprise as you walk out your back door!
