and the Official Dessert is…

I recently read a post on The Boston Traveler titled How to Make a Boston Cream Pie and how it was named in 1996 the state’s official dessert. I was curious as to why it is called the Boston Cream Pie, but further, I was interested in finding out the official desserts of the different states. Does Florida have an official dessert? And how does a dessert become ‘official’?

Well this is what I found out:

Florida is best known for pompano, citrus fruits and yes - key lime pie - of course.

Here are some other bits of information that I found out about the official foods of some regions:

California - known for cobb salad, avocados and figs

Kansas- wheat bread and chicken fried steak

Minnesota - Wild Rice, walleye, blueberries and SPAM (good ‘ol Austin, MN)

Mississippi - Mud Pie, Pecan Pie, Sweet Potato Pie ( Yum — sugar rush)

Nebraska - home of Kool-aid

Wisconsin - Colby cheese and Cranberry Pie ( Has anyone ever had cranberry pie? I lived in Wisconsin for over 20 years and have never heard of such a thing.)

This whole state fruit thing is a whole mystery to me. Does anyone know? I’d be interested to find out more. No luck so far. :(

Ohio=Buckeyes (both the nut and the candy), walleye (all of the Great Lakes states love walleye), pierogi, and stadium mustard.

Katherine, I think how these dishes become official differs from place to place. Boston Cream Pie was named the official MA state dessert thanks to a campaign started by students at local Norton High School. Isn’t that cool? And there was actually competition from other desserts, too, including Toll House cookies. Wonders never cease…

First off, a belated welcome to the channel Katherine!

I grew up in Orlando and my wife and I recently moved from Tampa to Amsterdam. They have great pastries over here in Europe but your post makes me miss a nice slice of delicious Florida key lime pie!

Thanks for the welcome. Amsterdam isn’t bad at all. Spent some time in Roermond and Maastricht and remember a trip we took to Belgium for Chocolate and Beer. I miss that!

I love that delicious Belgian chocolates and beer are so cheap here in the Netherlands!

We haven’t been down to Maastricht yet but I hear it’s beautiful, we’re planning to go down there soon!

6 and 1/2 years ago I met my now wife in Brugge, Belgium which is just gorgeous. We had both just graduated college and she was staying at the same hostel as me. Good memories of Belgium myself :-)
