In a town that is magical and is filled with theme parks, dancing and a symphony of entertainment on every corner, Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center absolutely amazes me. Best known for the elaborate Convention Center, Gaylord Palms is a city in itself. Located just 5 minutes away from Walt Disney World in Kissimmee, this 2.1 million square foot resort rings “The Sunshine State” from every corner. Having a greenhouse feel to it, this resort seems to be a hotel tucked away in a hotel.

Here we go. Memorial Day Weekend is upon us. Close your laptop, enjoy the sun (Yes, it was supposed to rain all weekend, but it is sunny and beautiful out today.), pack your car up and enjoy. Here is a collection of low or no cost activities to enjoy this holiday weekend.

Right now, the restaurants in South Florida are hurting. They will do anything to bring in business. Mark Militello, who was once named one of the “Ten Best Chefs in America by Food and Wine Magazine has just closed the last of his 4 restaurants – all 4 closing within the last 30 days. Restaurants need to be creative and distinguish themselves from the rest in order to bring in business. When I heard about the opening of a new bakery in Key West, it made me think about the crazy things restaurants will do to bring in traffic.

Tonight I attended a wine tasting at Beach House Bistro. Beach House is a casual restaurant with a tropical flair located right off of County Road in Palm Beach. It is absolutely adorable featuring an island inspired menu and a laid back atmosphere. The restaurant is just starting to make a name for itself as its only been open since December, but it is one that you need to keep on your radar. Pembroke Pines, located in western Broward County, is making a name for itself. Once, primarily an agricultural community, Pembroke Pines has grown to become the 2nd largest city in Broward County with a population of over 150,000 and it is now home to The Shops at Pembroke Gardens. This new lifestyle center features upscale retail shops and restaurants that many are surprised to find in this area. For those people who don’t want to fight the crowd or the traffic in Miami might want to escape to this new shopping center located directly off Interstate 75 at Pines Boulevard.

Miami has Miami Spice, Fort Lauderdale has Dine Out Lauderdale and now, Coral Gables has announced its first ever Coral Gables Restaurant Week (and I’ve heard there will be one in Palm Beach County called Flavor Palm Beach.) As restaurants struggle during the off-season, the Business Improvement District (BID) of Coral Gables has caught on to the growing trend of prix fixe discounted menus offered to the locals, and non-locals during the summer months.
